Posterior Mediastinal Lesions

Approximately 30% to 40% of pediatric mediastinal masses are found within the posterior mediastinal compartment. 1 , 37 The majority (88%) of these are neurogenic in origin, arising from mediastinal nervous tissues such as the peripheral nerves, sympathetic ganglia, or paraganglia. 1 , 37 Paravertebral lesions related to infection and trauma may also be encountered in this mediastinal compartment. 2 There is a high probability that posterior mediastinal masses may extend into the spinal canal, which warrants detailed imaging evaluation.
